Characters Welcome 5

Tonight is the opening of Characters Welcome 5 at Tattooed Mom‘s in Philly! The show, which features sticker art from around the world, starts at 7pm (21+), with an all ages show Saturday 1-5pm. Plenty of my stickers will be in the show,  and as in previous years, the boards of stickers are available for sale and 100% of the profits benefit youth art programs.

I was lucky enough to have been asked again to help set up for the show, which involves hours of peeling stickers from my favorite artists and sticking them on boards (with the occasional poutine break). This year, the sizes of the boards vary (12×12 to 2ftx4ft), so you’ll be able to find a board that fits your wall space.

The best part of this show is that it brings in street artists from all over the place (Philly and beyond) for a night where the stickers flow freely.  I’ll be giving stickers out to anyone who wants one, as well as some new block prints!  See you there!

Not just reading the book,

I’m happy to present my latest poster, this time for Phish’s 2016 Fall Tour.  Printed on multiple blocks, these prints are hand pulled, printed on 11×14 paper, and limited to a small edition of 20.

I hadn’t planned to do any posters for this tour (aside from the illustrated setlists)  after having created 13 posters for each show/run of summer tour (having summers off gives me a lot of free time).  With school back in session, and a bunch of new responsibilities (guess who’s mentoring the gifted students!) I didn’t think I’d have time to work on anything for this tour.  That mentality didn’t last too long.  I ended up creating this poster idea, inspired by the song “Cars Trucks Buses”.  I wanted to try something new for this poster, the summer tour ones being ink and watercolor as well as digital.  I decided to go back to block printing…

Gone Phishin’ Series

I recently finished up my latest series, 15 show posters for the band Phish’s summer tour.   I done posters for past shows, but only a handful (aside from my illustrated setlists for every show).  I wanted a bit of a challenge, and wanted every poster to have a common theme.  I also wanted to get back to drawing figures, as well as working with micron pens.  Using the obvious fishing theme, I used the state fish of each venue (as well as fish found in the area for multiple shows in the same state.)  Some of figures used were actual Phish fans who submitted pictures!

Brown Don’t Drown

I recently had the honor to participate in an all Latino group show put together by Sean 9 Lugo, a fellow artist from Jersey, who’s work is seen on and off the streets in Philly and NYC. The show took place at 17 Frost Gallery in NYC this July, and featured over 30 artists.

What I did with my Summer Vacation

Not just reading the book,

Back in May I had posted about my ambitious summer project, a poster for every show/run Phish played this summer.  I surprised myself when I first announced it, wondering if this was a good idea. I was still going to do the illustrated setlists, and those can take a lot of time on its own.  But here we are in August, and I can say it was a success! 13 posters, 11 different kinds of fish, and a few epic beards in 2 months.  It was fun working with detail again, it had been a couple years.  This was also my first time drawing fish, so I learned a lot doing that.  This project also allowed me to more acquainted with the digital medium.  Everything I learned has been self taught ( I avoided digital in college, and learned just enough to edit photographs), and I can say I can do a…

Surrender to the Flow #50

I was recently interviewed for the last issue of Surrender to the Flow, a publication created by Phish fans for Phish fans.  If you’ve gone to any show in the last 18 years, chances are you’ve seen them on lot.

A treasure trove of vital information any phan should know about the venues they’ll be visiting, as well as stories and articles about the band, scene, and phans. Created in 1998 (before the luxury of smartphone), each issue told you what you need to know for your trip, especially when doing multi city tours.

Summer Tour 2016!

Not just reading the book,

Feels Good.jpgTour is back!  My favorite time of year, because I have lots of free time to draw all day (benefits of being a teacher!)  I now enter my 3rd year doing my setlist illustrations (74+ setlists, 374+ song illustrations), and I’m ready to make some more!  At this point the process is more like a puzzle, since I’ve draw so many songs, although there will be new variations of songs I’ve drawn before (the ones they play regularly).  The headers will include all new drawings, as well as variations of my show posters I did for the shows as well.

2015 was a great year for me artwise! My setlist art helped me get a few jobs designing some show posters ( Without A Net,Jazz is Phish, and Tom Hamilton’s American Babies), and Poster sales helped raise over $200 dollars for Mockingbird Foundation ($1 from each setlist…

Phish Studio Era Compilations

Not just reading the book,

I recently provided some art for a Phish compilation created by Reddit user RiverportGin. It coincided with my ongoing project of creating song illustrations for Phish’s discography.  Gin approached me about doing the album art at the perfect time and me being  fan of Phan compilations, was happy to help out. This allowed me to draw the songs that Phish rarely plays live, and made me revisit their studio albums, which I haven’t heard in years.  According to RiverportGin, “The idea is to capture what was happening live at the time leading up to and immediately following each of the Phish studio albums. The start date for each compilation corresponds to when Phish
started studio work for the album and ends just before work on the next album
begins.”
