Tuesday is Pizza Day

It’s been a while since I’ve created some new art. I’ve spent my year distance teaching K-8 art, which has been pretty tricky. I’ve filled up sketch pads in the last couple months, but they are filled with examples for my art lessons, or drawings from my one-on-one sessions with students!

I recently introduced my students to the work of Ron Magnes, an Pittburgh based artist known for his food inspired digital art. My students learned how to draw a pizza slice and drew their favorite toppings on them. I did many sessions during my office hours showing students how to draw pizza slice, and each time I had the Ween song “Someday” going through my head. The words “Tuesday…is pizza day” got stuck in my head, eventually leading to some sketches.

I knew I wanted to do this image as a block print, and opted for a reduction print, which would allow me to do several colors. I was a bit nervous since I’ve only done 2 of these before, and it requires registration to make sure all the layers line up. But I had nothing to lose and went for it!

The image was created via a three color reduction process using waterbased ink for the color layers and Speedball Supergraphic oil based ink for the black layer. Image is 9×12 on 11×14 paper, signed and editioned. Available as 2 Variants, a regular and neon color editions. Each variant is available in 2 paper choices, a white Canson mixed media paper (98lb), and a crème Canson cold pressed watercolor paper (140lb).

Shop’s Open!

I recently reopened my shop, updating it with some older work, some unreleased stuff, and some new work! I had originally opened it as my Phish and Grateful dead started to take over my original shop, Joseeen.etsy.com . I wanted a shop for those who may not be fans, not having to scroll through art they wouldn’t have interest in. Over the years my main shop took over my life, along with working as an art teacher! Now, as a distance learning teacher, I find myself in my studio most of the day, so it seemed logical to go through and find work I had forgotten about. I went ahead and updated my shop, added new items such as shirts, and just released my first art print in a while! I’ll be adding more stuff, such as etchings and previously unreleased linocuts. I’ll also be adding some new prints I’ve been working on

The Dürer Series

Hey folks! It’s been a while since I’ve last posted here, most of my efforts going towards my other page www.phishart.net . However, in the current times we are in I’ve had a lot of free time, so I wanted to share how I spent my last year artwise!

2019 started with my largest block print to date, 12×18. Inspired by the Albrecht Dürer‘s Four Horsemen print, I made it for Phish’s first shows of the year. Between then and that summer I researched a lot of Dürer’s work and saw the potential of making a cohesive series for Phish’s summer tour. Each print is inspired by a Dürer print chosen for fitting in with a song or lyric, as well as “relevance” to where they were playing. I’d redraw the image, but changing it in ways to fit my vision. They were later transferred onto an 11×14 block, hand printed using oil based ink in editions of 30, along with smaller color variant editions. Working continuously from February til December, I ended up doing a total of 15 of these (13 for summer tour, 1 for fall tour, and 1 for the MSG NYE run)

nye-bw-web-1 2020 has been a strange year artistically. The back and hand pain that comes with hand printing linocuts has forced me to take a printmaking break, and go back to ink, watercolor, and paint. With the impending cancellation of this year’s Summer Tour, most of the images I made may be released as art prints. I had chosen this year to forgo a common theme, so each print I was doing worked on it’s own, most inspired by sketches, stickers, or drawing I’ve drawn in the past but never did anything with. Stay tuned for new work on the way!

I’ve recently finished up 2 more linocuts inspired by Grateful Dead songs, the 9th and 10th in an ongoing series. Although I have previously done both illustrations and linocuts, I feel I’ll probably be doing more linocuts for future songs. These have been a challenge, but I’ve enjoyed both the process and the research involved in making these. I’m hoping to work larger, although it seems a printing press of some sort will be necessary to accomplish that.

One of my most ambitious prints to date, This linocut is inspired by the song St. Stephen. 11×14 print on 14×17 98lb white paper. I have 2 versions available in my shop: the original, limited to an edition of 30, and the color variant, which is limited to an edition of 15.

Spring Update

So it’s been a while since I’ve posted here! The last couple months have been very busy, work and artwork wise. I recently revamped my shop to include a lot of my recent printmaking I’ve been focusing more on printmaking, including a few new prints and variants.

I created these for my 5th year at the Tattooed Mom’s tent for the South Street Spring Festival in early May. I had fun with these, creating several variations, including a 3D version that comes with cardboard 3D glasses! I have a few of these left, which are available in my shop.

Spring Fest!

It was an honor to be asked to join the TMom’s tent during the South Street Spring Festival for the 5th year in the row! I was able to join a couple other amazing Philly artists to sell artwork and represent the spirit of Tattooed Mom’s. The owner is a a big supporter of Philly Street art ( just go upstairs!), and rather than just sell some swag in their tent, he’d rather have artists sell their art! Thanks, Tmom’s!

New Shop!

I recently update my shop to include all my printmaking work. Since I’ve started doing my Phish inspired art, my main shop has been filled with that. I created another site for my other artwork, www.joseeen215.etsy.com. I must admit it was often neglected, but I’m working to prevent that! I’ve added new work, and may add new as well as some older work.

Phish!

Of course there’ll be plenty of a Phish art for the near future. With summer tour approaching, I’ll be making some posters for some of the concerts, with the Baker’s Dozen Run (13 show at Madison Square Garden during July/August) poster almost done. I will also be vending at 2 of the PhanArt Shows at the Hotel Penn, right across the street from MSG. With so many shows in NYC and no vending allowed outside the venue, this will be the chance to grab some Phish art from myself and a bunch of other awesome Phan artists! I’ll be posting all about my posters for summer tour as well as more in my other site: http://www.phishart.net. I’ll b repost onto this site, but will be sure not to overwhelm the non-phans!

Grateful Bears

I recently finished up these two linocuts, inspired by the Grateful Dead Bears. They were originally sketches for a Splintered Sunlight poster I worked on a couple months ago, but I put them aside and forgot about the until recently. I have been working mainly with linocuts this year, and was eager to find something new to carve. The first bear is a mashup between a bear and the skull and roses image (aka Bertha), and the second is an accurate bear skull. I’ve also be trying out new printmaking techniques, so the Bertha Bear is a 3 color reduction print, and I plan to do some handcolored versions of the other bear. I currently have a small edition of both (or as a set) in my shop.

I’m also currently working on a shop that focuses on my printmaking work. It’s a work in progess, so more items are being added constantly, both old and current prints.

Cumberland Blues

I recently finished up this linocut inspired by the song “Cumberland Blues” by the Grateful Dead. My largest print to date (12×18), this was quite a challenge since I was using a soft cut linoblock, which has the tendency to move when lots of pressure is applied. The print came out better than expected, and I ended up making 2 variations.

The regular edition was printed on 14.5×22 90lb cream paper and limited to an edition of 50. The variant was printed on 15×22 140lb cold pressed watercolor paper (hand colored to create a “tie-dye” effect), and limited to an edition of 25. Characters Welcome 5

Tonight is the opening of Characters Welcome 5 at Tattooed Mom‘s in Philly! The show, which features sticker art from around the world, starts at 7pm (21+), with an all ages show Saturday 1-5pm. Plenty of my stickers will be in the show, and as in previous years, the boards of stickers are available for sale and 100% of the profits benefit youth art programs.

I was lucky enough to have been asked again to help set up for the show, which involves hours of peeling stickers from my favorite artists and sticking them on boards (with the occasional poutine break). This year, the sizes of the boards vary (12×12 to 2ftx4ft), so you’ll be able to find a board that fits your wall space.

The best part of this show is that it brings in street artists from all over the place (Philly and beyond) for a night where the stickers flow freely. I’ll be giving stickers out to anyone who wants one, as well as some new block prints! See you there!

New Shop Now Open!

Throughout the last couple months, my Phish related art has taken off, and most of my time with that. I’ve been drawing illustrated setlists of every show since summer tour, and that has taken up my Etsy shop as well. I decided to open up a new shop for my other artwork (the stuff with skulls, dinosaurs, and girls). Some of it had previously been available, some will new, others will have never been offered online. I’ll be offering old work at reasonable prices, including sales in the future and be adding new work regularly.

Block and Roll

2013 started off on a roll (pardon the pun). I had been previously making some simple block prints (mainly examples that I’d use in class) which I’d make stickers out of, but I hadn’t really worked seriously with lino blocks since college.

Getting some new blades motivated me to work detailed again. My first couple prints were more studies than anything, making block print versions of several drawings/paintings I had done previously.
